After speaking to a good number of busy and mostly tired 9-5ers, I have come up with this list of top 10 comfort foods.

After a long day at work, good and familiar food is comforting and therapeutic, you are finally home, work clothes are off, wig or tie removed, and you are either sitting on the couch with a show on or on the floor just eating freely and peacefully.

Anyways before we get into it, note that this is a list of both proper meals and snacks here and there!

    Suya and chilled tigernut milk

This had to come first of course, because suya is GOATED and rightfully so, then with the natural tigernut flavor dancing on your tongue and fighting with the spiciness from the suya, unless you have another favorite though, but this particular combo is goodnessssss!!!

This combo is definitely top tier for a tired evening, because of course darkness is an ingredient for the best suya, so after a long day and probably the long drive heading home, just stop at a good spot and get a pack of that goodness for the evening and thank me later.

Stir-fried noodles with veggies, chicken, and a cold bottle of Chivita

Imagine a yummy looking plate of noodles, garnished with veggies, small chunks of beef or pieces of chicken added generously to make it a balanced meal.

Step this down with cold Chivita or your favorite juice. It is light, flavorful, and easy to eat without feeling heavy.

Pasta with lots of your favourite protein

I personally think whenever you talk of comfort and food in the same sentence, pasta marks its presence twice, largely because of how diverse it can be and just that soothing effect you can never get tired of!

Now imagine this with a generous combination of all your favorite proteins in one pot!

    I’m sure you're already relieved!

A bowl of fruit salad with a glass of milk

This one is soft, easy and healthy. It is ideal for those evenings when you want something filling but not heavy. The natural sugars provide a small energy boost while the mix of textures makes it fun to eat and this will give you a relaxing experience.

    Bole and yoghurt

Bole is smoky, starchy, and satisfying. Paired with cold yoghurt, the meal balances flavor and texture, spicy and soft bole with creamy, slightly sweet yoghurt. It is filling, easy to eat, and hits the comfort mark every time

Harvard standard garri with plenty of swimmers

When combined with milk, sugar, ice, and groundnuts, it becomes creamy,  and fully satisfying. It is one of those foods that feels like home the moment you sip it, garri has it’s place in the hearts of every true Nigerian and it always delivers!

    Shawarma and soda

Shawarma always tastes like a blend of everything and it sometimes feels too powerful to be classified as a snack. This is the kind of food you reach for when you want something warm, filling, and effortless. You are probably already on the couch, one hand holding the shawarma, the other on your phone and the cold drink helps cool things down.

Bowl of Ice cream with cool toppings

A bowl of ice cream with cool toppings like strawberries is instant comfort. After a stressful day, the cold, creamy taste helps you relax while the fruity sweetness and other toppings add small moments of joy, making it the perfect reward for getting through the day.

    Abula with lots of protein

Abula which is amala, ewedu, and gbegiri is hearty, full of flavor, and filling. Combined with plenty of protein such as beef, goat meat, fish, or assorted meat, it becomes a proper sit down meal that truly satisfies hunger and comfort cravings.

    Burger, fries and milkshake

Burger, fries, and a milkshake is the kind of comfort meal that feels like a warm hug after a long, stressful day. The juicy burger fills you up, the crispy fries give that satisfying crunch, and the creamy milkshake tops it off with something sweet and soothing. It’s familiar, indulgent, and perfect for switching your brain off and just enjoying the moment.

    The Final Scoop

At the end of the day, comfort food is really about what helps you unwind, reset, and feel human again after giving your all to work. Whether it’s a full plate, a quick snack, or a nostalgic combo that reminds you of home, these foods have a track record of doing wonders for tired 9–5ers.

You should definitely try one (or two 😌) of these comfort foods this week and see how much better your evenings feel. And if you have a top-tier comfort food that didn’t make this list, don’t keep it to yourself!
