Every bank analyst, every NYSC corper, every secondary school teacher started watching free YouTube courses at night, whispering the same word to themselves: japa, but the soft version — escape your salary without escaping the country.

    Some of that was true. A lot of it was marketing.

    Here is the honest 2026 picture. Tech in Nigeria is still one of the best bets a determined person can make for their income and their future. But the door that felt wide open in 2021 has narrowed. Global tech companies spent 2024 and 2025 cutting jobs — and when they cut, emerging-market teams, including Nigerian and Pan-African ones, tend to absorb a disproportionate share. The entry-level market is now crowded with thousands of bootcamp graduates who all learned the same React tutorial. AI tools can now do a chunk of the junior work that used to be your first job.

    None of that means you should not pivot. It means you should pivot smart, with your eyes open and a real plan, instead of chasing a 2021 dream in a 2026 market. Let us get into it.

    First, kill the myth: tech is not "learn to code"

    The single biggest mistake non-tech people make is assuming "getting into tech" means "becoming a software developer." Coding is one lane on a very wide road, and for a lot of you, it is not even the right lane.

    That is the part nobody tells the person grinding through a free coding course at 1am. If you hated debugging and loved organising people, you do not need to become a developer to "get into tech." You might be a project manager or a product manager. If you are the friend who always notices when a website is confusing, design might be your lane. If you lived in Excel as an accountant, data analytics is a short hop, not a leap.

    So before you buy any course, ask the better question: not "how do I learn to code," but "which tech role fits the brain and skills I already have?"

    Pick a lane using the skills you already own

    If you are an accountant, banker, or finance person, look hard at data analysis, fintech product/operations, or finance roles inside tech companies. Nigeria's fintech ecosystem — Paystack, Flutterwave, Moniepoint, Kuda, Interswitch — runs on people who understand money and tools. An accountant who learns SQL, Excel-to-Power-BI, and a bit of product sense becomes a fintech analyst far faster than they would become a backend engineer.

    If you are a teacher, NGO worker, or anyone good with people and process, project management, customer success, and product/operations roles want you. You already manage stakeholders, hit deadlines, and explain hard things simply.

    If you sold anything — insurance, ads, real estate, anything — B2B tech sales and account management roles in SaaS and fintech are some of the most under-applied-for, well-paid roles in the ecosystem.

    If you are a writer, comms person, or journalist, technical writing, content, and product marketing are real, growing tech jobs.

    If you are visual, detail-obsessed, and empathetic about how things feel to use, product design / UX is your lane.

    If you genuinely enjoy logic puzzles and building things, then yes — software engineering, or its calmer cousins like QA and data engineering.

    Notice the pattern: every lane has a bridge from a non-tech life. Walk across the bridge nearest to you.

    The honest market and money reality (2026)

    Now the part the hype merchants skip. Let us talk real numbers, because a plan built on fantasy salaries collapses on contact with reality.

This is the part of the dream that is genuinely true. But notice the word experienced. The good news hiding inside the bad: demand for people who can actually do the work — especially anyone fluent in AI tools, data, and real product thinking — remains strong and largely unmet in Nigerian banks, fintechs, and enterprises.     Self-study, bootcamp, or degree — what actually works

    Three real paths, three honest trade-offs.

    Self-study is the cheapest and slowest-to-credibility route. The internet has everything you need for free or near-free — freeCodeCamp, YouTube, Coursera, Google's certificates. It works brilliantly for the disciplined and brutally for the unstructured. Realistic timeline to genuine employability through pure self-study: 9 to 18 months of consistent effort, longer if you are doing it around a full-time job. The risk is not the material; it is finishing, and finishing with proof.

    Bootcamps buy you structure, accountability, peers, and — the real product — a deadline and a portfolio. Nigeria has serious options: AltSchool Africa (programmes typically running 9-12 months across engineering, data, product design and more), Decagon (an intensive roughly six-month engineering programme, four months of training plus a two-month internship), and Semicolon, among others. These schools advertise high placement rates, and the strong ones genuinely do place graduates at companies like Flutterwave, Interswitch and beyond. But read the fine print, buddy: placement rates are marketing numbers, cohorts vary, and even the best bootcamp recently faced public questions about how sustainable its model is. A bootcamp accelerates a committed person. It does not rescue an uncommitted one. Choose one with a real portfolio output and a track record you can verify by talking to actual alumni — not just the testimonials on the website.

    A degree (computer science, or a conversion master's) is the slowest and most expensive, and frankly unnecessary for most lanes — design, data analysis, product, sales, support and writing rarely require one. It earns its keep mainly for deep engineering and for roles or visa routes that still screen on credentials.

    For most career-switchers reading this, the honest answer is: a structured path (a good bootcamp or a disciplined self-study plan with a real syllabus) over 6 to 12 months, built entirely around producing proof.

    Proof beats certificates — build the portfolio

    Here is the truth that humbles every certificate collector: in 2026, nobody is impressed by a wall of course completions. Everyone has those now. What separates you is proof that you can do the job.

    Whatever your lane, build three to five real artifacts:

    • Developers: projects on GitHub that solve an actual problem — not another to-do app. Clone a feature of a Nigerian product, build a tool a real person would use, contribute to open source.

Most roles, especially the good early ones, travel through people before they ever hit a job board.

    So do not job-hunt in silence. Join the communities for your lane (design, data, product, your stack). Attend the meetups and the free events. Build in public — post what you are learning and building on LinkedIn and X, even when it feels small. Comment thoughtfully on the people one or two steps ahead of you. Slide into informational chats, not desperate "kindly assist me" DMs. The person who is visibly learning and building for six months becomes the obvious name when a junior slot opens.

    You do not need three years. You need a focused, honest year.

    • Months 1-2: Choose and validate. Pick your lane based on your transferable skills, not the loudest Twitter trend. Talk to two or three people already doing it. Confirm it fits your brain and your money goals. Lock in your learning path (bootcamp or a structured self-study syllabus).

    • Months 3-6: Build the core skill. Go deep, not wide. Learn the actual tools of your lane. Start your first one or two portfolio pieces while you learn — proof and learning at the same time. Join your community now, not later.

    • Months 6-9: Stack the proof and get visible. Finish three to five strong portfolio artifacts, each carrying your domain flavour. Build in public weekly. Fix your CV and LinkedIn around your new lane. Start collecting real feedback from people in the field.

    • Months 9-12: Convert. Apply hard — and lean on your network harder. Target Nigerian startups, fintechs and agencies for that first role; treat the dollar-remote role as the next promotion, not the entry point. Take internships, contracts, even underpaid first gigs that hand you real experience and a reference. Your second job is where tech pays you properly. The first one just gets you in the room.
