My Company Let Me Work for Months, Then Said I Wasn’t Officially Employed and Refused to Pay

You know how they say, "Always get your offer letter in writing"? Well, I learned that lesson the hardest way possible.

It all started when I got what seemed like a golden opportunity at a great company. The manager was enthusiastic, the role seemed perfect, and after a couple of interviews, they said, "You’re exactly what we need!" I was told to start immediately while HR "processed my employment paperwork." That should have been my first red flag.

But I was excited, so I got right in. For more than 2 whole months, I worked my butt off, handling client projects, attending high-pressure meetings, even staying late to meet deadlines. I was basically running an entire department on my own. And then, the first payday came.

No alert.

I figured, okay, maybe there was a processing delay. Then the second month rolled around. Still nothing. 

By the third month, I finally went to HR, hoping to sort it out. 

HR: "Oh, you haven’t been paid? That’s strange. Let’s check your records."

A few minutes later…

HR: "We don’t have an official employment record for you."

Me: "Excuse me?"

HR: "Yeah, it looks like your employment was never formally processed. You were supposed to receive a contract, but it was never finalized. So technically… you were never an employee."

Never an employee?! But I had a company email! I had an ID card! I had been reporting to work EVERY SINGLE DAY! How was I suddenly a ghost?

I stormed into my manager’s office, expecting him to sort it out. The man had the audacity to say, "Ah, I thought you knew. The paperwork wasn’t completed, so officially, we can’t pay you."

My guy, WHAT?!

I demanded my salary, but they hit me with: “There’s nothing we can do. You should have followed up on your employment status.” Oh, so now it's MY fault?

I threatened legal action. They laughed. Laughed. Said I didn’t have a contract, so I had no case. They even suggested I could "volunteer" while they figured things out.

I walked out and never looked back. 2+ months of free labor, gone. I learned two things that day:

1. If you don’t have an offer letter, you don’t have a job.

2. Companies will exploit you if you let them.

Now, anytime someone tells me they “just started” without signing anything, I grab them by the shoulders and scream: "GET IT IN WRITING!"
