There is a story going around the Nigerian job market that has scared an entire generation of applicants into formatting paralysis. It goes like this: "A robot reads your CV first, and 75% of CVs are rejected by the machine before a human ever sees them." So people strip out every design element, stuff their CVs with invisible white-text keywords, and still hear nothing back. Then they conclude the robot ate their CV.
Here is the uncomfortable truth: the robot is mostly innocent.
The "75% of CVs are auto-rejected by the ATS" line is one of the most repeated and least accurate stats in the careers industry. When Enhancv interviewed 25 recruiters across more than ten different Applicant Tracking Systems in 2025, 92% of them said their ATS does not automatically reject candidates based on the content of their CV. Only two out of the twenty-five had configured their system to auto-reject at all. The ATS is not a bouncer deciding who gets in. It is a filing cabinet with a search function.
So if a machine is not throwing your CV in the bin, why does it feel like it disappeared into a black hole? Let us clear the fog, because once you understand what is actually happening, writing a CV that gets shortlisted stops being guesswork.
What an ATS actually is (and what it is not)
ATS stands for Applicant Tracking System. It is the software a company uses to collect, store, sort, and search every application that comes in. Globally, 98% of Fortune 500 companies use one. Roughly 66% of large companies (over 1,000 employees) use one, and adoption among smaller businesses has climbed to about 35%, up from 20% in 2020.
In Nigeria, you are meeting the ATS more often than you think. If you have applied to a multinational, a big bank, or a telco, you have likely been routed through Workday, SuccessFactors, or Oracle Taleo. If you applied to a startup or a fintech, it was probably Greenhouse, Lever, or Ashby. And a growing number of Nigerian and Pan-African companies now run on homegrown HR software like SeamlessHR. The brand changes; the function does not.
Here is the part nobody tells you. The ATS does three jobs: it parses your CV (turns your document into structured data), it stores that data so a recruiter can search it later, and it ranks candidates against the job when the recruiter asks it to. That is it. The decision to shortlist you is still made by a human being who is searching, filtering, and skimming.
So why does your CV really get ignored?
Three reasons, and none of them is "the robot hates you."
Reason one: volume. This is the real villain. A single entry-level role in Lagos can pull 400 to 600 applications. A remote role that pays in dollars can cross 1,000 applicants in the first week. A recruiter is not reading 600 CVs word for word. They are running a search, opening the top results, and giving each one a glance.
Reason two: the seven-second skim. Ladders ran an eye-tracking study on professional recruiters and found that the initial screen of a CV takes about 7.4 seconds. In that window the recruiter is looking for your most recent job title, the company you did it at, how long you stayed, and whether the top third of the page tells them you can do this job. If your CV makes them hunt, you lose to the next CV that made it obvious.
Reason three: parsing failures and keyword mismatch. This is where the ATS does quietly hurt you, just not in the way the myth claims. When a CV is built with heavy tables, multiple columns, text boxes, or images, the parser frequently mangles it, and roughly a quarter of parsing failures trace back to exactly these elements. Your beautiful two-column Canva CV can come out the other side as scrambled soup, so when the recruiter searches "financial analyst Lagos," your perfectly qualified CV never surfaces. And separately, if the language on your CV does not match the language in the job description, you simply do not appear in the searches recruiters run.
The format that survives both the parser and the human
You do not need to dumb your CV down into something ugly. You need to make it clean enough for a machine to read and sharp enough for a human to want to. Here is the structure that does both.
Use a single-column layout. One column, top to bottom. No side panels, no text boxes. This is the single biggest parsing fix you can make. Save your gorgeous designs for the portfolio; the application CV is a working document.
Save and send as a .docx or a text-based PDF. A PDF exported from Word or Google Docs is fine because the text is selectable. A PDF that is actually a flattened image is not, because the parser sees a picture, not words. Quick test: open your PDF and try to highlight a sentence. If you can select the text, the machine can read it.
